WWW Wednesday – July 8, 2020

In an attempt to try and be more consistent with my blogging, I thought I’d try doing the WWW Wednesday tag hosted by Taking on a World of Words. Since I don’t have any semblance of a posting schedule and don’t review every book I read, I figured this might be a way for me to give some quick thoughts about what I’m reading.

I am currently reading The Deep by Alma Katsu. This book follows a woman, Annie, who survived the Titanic’s infamous journey and is now, four years later, on the sister ship as a war nurse. Anything I wrote about in last week’s WWW Wednesday went out the window because a bunch of my holds on Libby started coming in. This is one of them. This book has a ton of elements I enjoy reading about – the Titanic, World War I, sirens, and ghosts? – but I am concerned that it’s too much in one story. I’m not sure yet because I’m still really having fun reading this book and I have hopes that I will be satisfied in the end.

I’ve finished two books since last Wednesday. First was So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo. I got the audiobook for this through Libby and listened to it while working around the apartment. This is a nonfiction book primarily for beginners in anti-racism and covers a variety of topics including microaggressions and cultural appropriation. Even if you aren’t a beginner, I think it might be good to revisit some of these topics and be reminded of how to approach different conversations regarding race.

I also read another one of my Libby holds, Wilder Girls by Rory Power. This is a YA horror about a group of girls who are quarantined on an island because of a disease called “the Tox.” This disease changes their bodies in some graphic and horrific ways. I can’t say much more about the plot of this book because I think it’s best to just jump in if you’re going to read it. I really enjoyed this book and am continuing to think about Power’s underlying themes of womanhood and puberty and I think this is one that will stick with me for quite a while.

Next up for me is Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert. This is the last Libby book I have for now and I’ve been waiting for this for ages! I don’t usually read romance but I like the idea of it. From what I’ve heard about this book, I think this will be one that I will enjoy because the characters seem well-rounded and interesting outside of just being in love. I’m hoping this starts a long relationship between me and romance novels because sometimes I just want something sweet and fun.
